Injustice to Surat Aviation

There are theories and conspiracy theories on why Surat is not getting its due as far as air connectivity is concerned. We have with us raw footage in six parts of an interview held by documentary film maker late Shalin Shelat for the "Our Surat" documentary. Some of the clips from these footage have been included in the documentary. We have placed all of them in this blog post.

Surat citizens meekly listen to the technical jargon presented by airlines about unsuitability of the airport to operate flights and umpteen number of excuses why they cannot operate in Surat. They will even go to the extent of lying to a gathering of 100,000 fliers in Surat telling them that Surat has no fliers and no business. The major hurdle is that the private airlines led by Indigo, Go, SpiceJet and Jet Airways have formed a cartel. Surat does not find any favor with this cartel of private airlines and they block attempts by newcomers like Air Asia also to serve Surat. They themselves do not want to serve and they do not let those who want to serve get any approvals. The entire bureaucracy has been hijacked by them to block any efforts of air connectivity to Surat as it is a threat to their existing setup.

The national carrier Air India does serve Surat but these airlines have found a way through cooperating travel agents to indulge in malpractice to manipulate flight loads of Air India causing the national carrier tremendous losses. The biggest cancer is that rather than have a professionally run aviation setup in India, it is fully politically run with bureaucrats managing to run the show by manipulating politicians.

What is discussed in this series of videos is just a tip of the iceberg and more has unfolded thereafter.

If anyone has more conspiracy theories, please do post your comment.

  1. Injustice to Surat continues today. The entire cartel of private airlines including Indigo, GO, SpiceJet and Jet are against Surat. We do not know if it is a single entity controlling all these airlines but Surat is chained by politics and bureaucracy.
